Mace Windu and the Chancellor were locked in a stalemate. Jedi Master against Sith Lord. The Chancellor begged Anakin to remember Padmé. Master Windu called him to duty. Indecision rooted him to the spot.

From this conflict only one side could walk away alive. The Chancellor was his only hope to save Padmé.

If Palpatine lived then not only Master Windu would die but also Obi-Wan and every Jedi from old Master Yoda to the youngest child in the creche. It would horrify Padme.

"Padmé, forgive me."

He brought his lightsaber down in one decisive stroke.
